An interesting morning in the kitchen...

In baking, as in all aspects of life, not everything always goes as planned. This morning in the kitchen was a fantastic example of that. Today we had an order for 4 cinnamon rolls, usually not a very difficult order. As I made the batch of cinnamon rolls, everything was going great. The flour, sugar, eggs, butter and yeast were blending together beautifully, making smooth, buttery dough. After proofing for about 10 minutes the dough had risen perfectly, ready to be rolled out. I rolled out the dough and spread a nice even layer of more butter (the key to any good cinnamon roll!) along with the cinnamon and sugar. I rolled up the dough to make one long cinnamon roll, cut them to the right individual sizes, and brushed them with egg wash (to make the finished rolls golden brown and shiny), then placed them back in the proofer to rise again. After they had doubled in size, they were ready for the oven. They baked for about 12 minutes to a perfect golden brown, with a delicately soft center. I pulled them out of the oven and… dropped them. The entire tray of cinnamon rolls that I had painstakingly worked on for an hour and a half was all over the floor. I wanted to cry, but all we could really do was laugh. What could we do?

The only answer, of course, was that we had to make them again.

This time my husband Joe made them, as I had Valentine’s Day desserts to get working on (today I was perfecting my Opera Torte: beautiful layers of almond sponge cake, coffee flavored buttercream, and dark chocolate ganache. A truly wonderful and decadent dessert) and I just couldn’t look at another batch of cinnamon rolls just yet. He made them, just as I had the first time- or so we thought. When I pulled the cinnamon rolls out of the oven, however, I noticed they looked a little different. “Joe, these don’t look quite right. Is there cinnamon in these?” I asked him. His jaw dropped as he realized he had forgotten the cinnamon in the filling of the cinnamon rolls!! We laughed harder than ever at such a silly mistake. What is a cinnamon roll without the cinnamon?! You guessed it… just a roll.

So needless to say, we made one more batch; this time working as a team. They came out of the oven more beautiful than the two times before that. They became even more gorgeous when we added the cream cheese icing. And if we didn’t already know it, today we learned that teamwork and a little laughter go a long way!
